Start with trust
You cannot learn well while you are busy protecting yourself from embarrassment.

Meet Emily Pyke
I’m a Red Seal 310S Automotive Service Technician, instructor, mentor and the founder of TurnPyke Academy. I built this for the people who are capable of learning the trade but were never given an explanation that actually made sense.

The route here
Automotive found me in high school and changed the direction of my life. I became a mom at 17, graduated with honours and started building a career in a trade where very few people expected me to belong.
I learned from the shop floor up: as an apprentice, a technician asking a thousand questions, and eventually a Red Seal 310S Automotive Service Technician with advanced Toyota and Lexus hybrid training and years of real diagnostic experience.
But teaching kept pulling me forward. I loved the moment an electrical diagram stopped looking like hieroglyphics, an apprentice finally trusted their own diagnostic thinking, or someone who had failed an exam realized that one result did not define their ability.
TurnPyke Academy brings all of that together: real trade knowledge, patient explanation, high standards and a learning space where nobody has to pretend they already know.

A career built by showing up
The titles matter. The work behind them matters more.
A high school auto class introduced me to work that was technical, physical and endlessly challenging. I found the thing that made me want to keep learning.
Apprenticeship taught me the trade, but also how much access, trust and strong mentorship shape the technician someone becomes.
Mentoring apprentices, leading workshops and supporting C of Q preparation showed me that knowing the answer is not the same as knowing how to teach it.
I created the learning space I wanted apprentices to have: welcoming, technically strong, honest, practical and completely uninterested in making people feel small.
The TurnPyke method
You cannot learn well while you are busy protecting yourself from embarrassment.
No matter the level, strong diagnosis starts with understanding how the system is supposed to work.
The right answer matters. Knowing why the other answers do not fit matters even more.
The goal is not only passing an exam. It is making stronger decisions in the bay the next morning.
Beyond the classroom
My work has taken me into classrooms, shops, apprenticeship boot camps, youth programs, industry panels and community events. I have supported apprentices through Support Ontario Youth, contributed to Conestoga College programs and events, and worked alongside organizations including AIA Canada, Skills Ontario and Build a Dream.
I show up because access matters. Apprentices need technical training, but they also need someone willing to slow down, answer the uncomfortable question and remind them that struggling with a concept is not the same thing as being incapable.
